Success! Mature Forest Protection in Snohomish County Update

You made this happen! Over 500 of you sent comments to the WA Board of Natural Resources to say mature forests ‘Stilly Revisited’ and ‘Ridge Ender’ should not be logged. The Daily Herald printed our op/ed on March 23rd describing the issue for the public. Recent news indicates the Board has taken ALL mature forests off the list for auction at its next meeting on April 2nd. This is likely a temporary reprieve for our forests, but it is an indication that the Board has heard the public. Thanks to all of you who responded.
We are grateful to our County Council for requesting participation in protection of mature forests through the Natural Climate Solutions budget provisos of 2023 and 2024. But mature forests with forest practice applications issued on them before March 5th are now ineligible. The Council has allowed the Dept. of Natural Resources to select the land to be protected. So far, no mature forests scheduled to be logged soon have been nominated. The intent of the legislation is to protect mature forests. LWVSC hopes to have the opportunity to discuss with our Council why all mature forests in Snohomish County must be protected as well as trust beneficiaries and rural communities.
Join us to strategize on further protection on the second Tuesday of the month at for an hour. See the calendar for the link.
