Transportation Committee

Mission of the Committee

With transportation being an important part of our daily lives, the LWVSC Transportation Committee is dedicated to learning about and informing Snohomish County residents about current transportation modes and issues.

Goals:
  • Investigate the effects of oil and coal trains as they transverse Washington state
  • Review I-405 traffic congestion, capacity, cost (tolling report), and lane design
  • Track progress on Sound Transit 3 and its impact on Snohomish County communities
  • Explore how Community Transit interfaces with other transit agencies, i.e., Sound Transit and Everett Transit in Snohomish County

Our Work

In April, 2018, the Transportation Committee held a forum on transportation issues in Snohomish County. Panelists were:

  • Josh Brown, Executive Director of Puget Sound Regional Council
  • David Hablewitz, Stop405Tolls.org
  • Emmett Heath, CEO of Community Transit
  • Senator Steve Hobbs, WA State Senate Transportation Committee
  • Steve Marshall, Transportation Technology Partnership Manager, City of Bellevue
  • Senator John McCoy, WA State Senate Transportation Committee
  • Roger Millar, WA State Secretary of Transportation
  • Peter Rogoff, CEO of Sound Transit

Oil Train Information

In 2017, the Transportation Committee sponsored an informational meeting with Jase Brooks and Rob Dengel from the WA State Department of Ecology.  They explained the Oil Transportation Safety Act as a positive step to protect the environment and residents from spill risks when oil is moved by train. The DoE provides quarterly reports of crude oil movement by rail and pipeline. These quarterly reports can be accessed on the Department of Ecology website.
