On August 22-23 the Board of Natural Resources (BNR) held their annual retreat in Whatcom County. A group of about 200 gathered to rally at Maritime Heritage Park in Bellingham on Aug. 22. Several members of the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County were there to deliver a simple message:

"Commissioner Franz and BNR, please become the climate champions we need you to be: enact a mature forest conservation policy NOW!"

The goal of the rally was to achieve the permanent protection of the last remaining legacy forests in Western Washington by working with impacted local communities and state policymakers. Conservation organizations from around the state came to accelerate the adoption of state forest policy and practices grounded in forest ecology. The crowd demanded that our forests be managed for climate change and biodiversity, not just for timber profits.

Leaders including Lummi tribal leader Jewell James, Lummi Tribe Master Carver from the House of Tears Carvers’ Totem Pole Journeys, spoke with passion about coming together to change policies in Washington. There was a plethora of artistic performances, including but not limited to trees who hug back and a variety of wild animal costumes. The crowd was upbeat, committed, and peaceful.  They were also united in the importance of protecting biodiverse old growth forest.  The well-being of the entire planet hinges on decisions made today.
