President's Pen - April 2025

Cathy Liu Scott | Published on 4/3/2025

I am so proud of our local League. With only five days’ notice to plan and hold Light for Our Democracy Actions in Snohomish County, we actually held four. Together at Bothell, Edmonds, Everett and Snohomish, we estimated more than 500 people participated in standing for democracy during the President’s speech to Congress on March 4.  Our members turned out and brought the community with them. There was a multitude of Light for Our Democracy actions across the nation with the help of many partners. It felt good to stand up and stand out!

Now we are busy planning our participation in a nationwide action called Hands Off! on Saturday, April 5. We want to say loud and clear:
  • Hands Off Our Democracy!
  • Hands Off Our Health Care!
  • Hands Off Social Security!
  • Hands Off Our Data!
  • Hands Off Public Schools!
  • Hands Off Our Bodies!
  • Hands Off Our Wallets!
  • Hands Off Public Lands!
This action is being led by Indivisible with many organizations in coalition including the League of Women Voters. LWV of Snohomish County is focusing our efforts in Everett where there will be a rally and a march. Here is  the information you need:
Gather at the Snohomish County Campus, Public Plaza, at the corner of Rockerfeller and Wall Streets.

Schedule
12-1 P.M.   Community gathering and sign making tent. We are having LWV signs printed as well.
1-2 P.M.   Speakers will include Council Member Dunn, Representative Fosse, our own Karen Crowley, and members of various affected groups hurt by these drastic cuts.
2-3 P.M.   Two block walk down to Broadway carrying signs and our banner to the rally on Broadway.

A core principle behind all "Hands Off!" events is a commitment to nonviolent action. All participants seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. If you can’t make the Everett event here is a link to other actions on April 5.

Please remember that even though others of our coalition partners may be partisan, the League of Women Voters stands fast as a non-partisan organization. To do that, I encourage you to speak out against the policies and unlawful actions of the current administration and the inaction of Congress.  We must defend democracy.
