League of Women Voters “Why We Vote” Presentation to Meadowdale High School Seniors

Vonita Francisco | Published on 11/2/2025

On October 15, League of Women Voters of Snohomish County members Jane McClure and Vonita Francisco visited Meadowdale High School, Lynnwood, to speak with senior students in Erin Smallwood’s Ethnic Studies and World History classes about the importance of civic participation and understanding the power of their vote.

The interactive presentation, Why We Vote, explored how local, state, and national elections directly impact students’ daily lives—from policies that shape education and public safety to decisions that affect the environment, healthcare, and community resources. Students also learned how to find trustworthy election information, interpret a ballot, and participate in democracy as first-time voters or pre-registered voters.

Teacher Erin Smallwood shared her appreciation afterward:
“It meant the world to me and really sparked some important curiosity in my students! I appreciate all the work you do to help people get engaged with our democracy—it’s important work that can’t be forgotten.”

McClure, who co-chairs the League’s Student Video Contest Committee, said:
“It was my absolute pleasure to share with your students the importance of voting. Have presentation—will travel!”

The League’s visit was part of its ongoing outreach to young voters in Snohomish County schools. Each session aims to empower students to see themselves as active participants in shaping their communities.

Teachers interested in hosting a League presentation on civic engagement or voter education are encouraged to send an email to our contact address  for more information.
