Issues and Advocacy

The mission of the League of Women Voters is to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy.

League action on selected issues is guided by statements of position arrived at by a process of study and discussion. If consensus is reached on a position, this position becomes the basis for future action. Positions are developed at the local (LWVSC), state (LWVWA) and national (LWVUS) levels.

Local leagues can act on

  • Local positions developed through study and consensus
  • State positions if a state position applies to the local governmental jurisdiction
  • National positions if a national position applies to the local governmental jurisdiction
  • State or national positions when requested by LWVWA or LWVUS

The LWV Overview of Program describes how suggestions become actions, how members reach agreement, how League positions are formulated, and the responsibility of national, state, and local boards to monitor the entire process and ensure that the membership is able to come to consensus in an unbiased and nonpartisan atmosphere.
